Was there ever a more theatrical novel than OLIVER TWIST? Charles Dickens’ early masterpiece has gone down in literary history as the first novel about the poor and criminal in western literature. Does any other novel have such unforgettable characters? – Fagin, the Artful Dodger, Nancy, Bill Sikes and Oliver himself are etched in our culture as few others outside of Shakespeare’s canon. Paul Stebbings and Phil Smith dramatise the novel and Thomas Johnson provides a stunning a capella score. The production goes for the dark heart of the novel and asks the ever pertinent question: are poverty and crime linked? The production has been performed more often than any other by ADGE or TNT over the last 15 years. Last season saw its spectacular success in China which paved the way for our current regular tours to the world’s most populated country. This season sees our new production (co-directed by Peter Joucla who featured in the original production) ) tour Europe and Asia, returning to China for an epic tour in the Spring of 2009.
