At the dawn of the Observant Franciscans: the polyptych of San Bernardino
With Giuseppe Sava

In 1452 the first monastery of the Observant Franciscans was founded in Trento. The event is symbolically represented by the polyptych of San Bernardino, an ambitious altarpiece donated by some of the most distinguished supporters of the Franciscan foundation.
The plastic and pictorial components of the polyptych exemplify the spiritual, iconographic and aesthetic demands of the Order. Testifying to a phase of transition from the late Gothic period to the Renaissance, this artwork - now in the Tridentine Diocesan Museum - is the only "mixed" polyptych from the Veneto area to be found in Trentino.
