Beyond the symbolic and discrete mathematical skills which have been developed in some societies, the non-symbolic bases of the representation of numbers are rooted in the activities of the nervous systems. Based on the estimate of quantity, they can also be observedin the creatures devoid of symbolic language, such as infants and animals.
