Die Bajadere

Café chantant-like atmospheres at the Social Theatre

Drama , Operetta

Among the most popular exotic operettas and an example of a typical taste for the East – which characterizes the musical theatre – Die Bajadere is one of the best works by Hungarian composer Imre Kálmán Emmerich, after the great success of The Riviera Girl and Countess Mariza. Admired and applauded in Vienna, but also in Moscow and Paris, with the English-language title of The Yankee Princess, the work received its first New York City performances in October 1922, and its inventive brilliance also amazed Puccini.

The libretto of Die Bajadere is based on a sentimental plot. The story, set in Paris, tells of an Indian prince, Radjami, forced to get married in order to ascend the throne. In Paris he meets Odette Darimonde, an operetta diva. Will this be the woman that fate has chosen for him?

Liveliness and feeling take turns, while the story runs in an elegant and graceful form, supported by many musical instruments that really appeal to and  fully involve the audience.
