Fragments of a boundless landscape
Mountains in photos, 1850 - 1870

The exhibition is a precious collection of images exploring the origins of the mountains and the construction of the collective imagination, presenting fragments of a boundless landscape, as if in
a single photograph: from the Alps to the Pyrenees, the Himalayas and Mount Sinai, up to the mountains of Algeria. The exhibition includes a selection of around one hundred and fifty primitive photographs, all very well known; from the collections of the Museo Nazionale della Montagna
in Turin there are large prints, individual and in albums, by the Bisson brothers or Édouard Baldus, samuel Bourne and Francis Frith, from victor Muzet to Giacomo Brogi and many others. The images are evocative in terms of their content, composition, size and quality, impressive in relation to the technique and results, and fascinating as only early photographs from the 19th century can be.
The focus is on the relationship between landscape and photography in the 1850-1870 period, part of the broader relationship between man and the environment.
