The two-act operetta Orpheus in the Underworld by Jacques Offenbach, first performed in 1858 at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens, is said to be the first classical full-length operetta, and Offenbach is considered the father of the European Operetta.
Orpheus in the Underworld is the model of the transgressive and ingenious parody Offenbach made of the society and power of the Second Empire.
