Penguin Cafe
Music for explorers of boundless spaces

Arthur Jeffes is the son of the sculptor Emily Young and Simon Jeffes, who in 1974 founded the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, one of those groups that left an indelible mark on the history of contemporary music, so much so that their first album “Music from the Penguin Café” - released by Brian Eno's Obscure Records in 1976 - is considered by many to be a forerunner of world music. In fact, Simon Jeffes had developed a keen interest in ethnic music and African styles which he then brought to the Penguin Cafe Orchestra in that unique mix of attention to melody and desire to experiment. This hybrid approach moves across different geographical spaces and different musical periods and it infused all their albums until the death of that extraordinary musician.
Arthur Jeffes, eclectic musician and composer, a pianist with an interest in the music of space and who has written several pieces for NASA's Kepler project, is now frontman of Penguin Café, founded after the 2007 tribute to his father and the formation of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra. He went on to transform the line-up bringing in musicians that included Cass Browne of Gorillaz, Neil Codling of Suede, Oli Langford of Florence and the Machine and Darren Berry of Razorlight. The three albums they have released retain the basic musical structure of Jeffes senior, but it is combined with new sensibilities brought by Arthur and his companions. The result is a pervasive and at times celestial music, always inquiring and with the ability to bring distant universes together.
