From an idea by Vittorio Sgarbi. Curated by Gabriele Lorenzoni

The Mart presents a major monographic exhibition dedicated to Stefano Di Stasio, an artist and intellectual who has been active in Rome since the late 1970s.

After some initial experimentation, Di Stasio devoted his career to figurative painting, with dedication and consistency in those years when the art market and art critics preferred other artistic idioms. After the avant-garde artists of the 1970s, Di Stasio is in fact one of the pioneers in the return to painting, thanks also to the support of Plinio De Martiis’ gallery, La Tartaruga.

His work blends elements of realism with enigmatic atmospheres and references to classical compositional forms. In the 1980s and 1990s, he exhibited in museums and galleries, was appreciated by the most discerning collectors, his works were presented at the Venice Biennale and he participated in several editions of the Quadriennale in Rome.

In an exhibition of over 50 works, 2 of which belong to the Mart Collections, "Stefano Di Stasio. Da genti e paesi lontani [Stefano Di Stasio. From Distant Peoples and Lands]" focuses on the artist's most recent research, also thanks to the fact that he has a significant body of previously unseen works.
