The Matoci Carnival
One of the oldest Carnivals in the Alps

In Val di Fiemme, on the last Saturday of the Carnival the "Matòci Carnival" takes place in Valfloriana, Val di Fiemme. It displays the ancient custom of bridal processions, transformed into a carnival show dating from the beginning of the last century. The "Matòci" are comical characters wearing colourful outfits, embellished with bright ribbons, rosettes and traditional wooden masks that cover their faces, known as "facère". They walk walks from village to village to meet in the main square of Casatta.
To reach the destination they have to pass many "obstacle" and answer some difficult and satirical questions. This is the only way to pass from one village to the other, as in the past it was common to pay a toll to walk freely.
In Casatta the Carnival ends with dances, tricks, sweets an wine.
