The mathematician’s job

What do mathematicians do if they’re not teaching? What does their job consist in?
The concept of the mathematical model allows an answer to these questions, as tackling with problems is crucial: it motivates us to carry out research. Over the centuries, problems themselves have been arising in variegated fields, so that mathematicians not only have a confrontation with physicists, but with an increasing number of partners.
