The plaster cast gallery of Andrea Malfatti

Cultural exhibitions and events , Guided tour

The exhibition, curated by the architect Michelangelo Lupo in collaboration with the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Trento and Rovereto (Mart), is organised by the Municipality of Trento. The exhibition wants to draw attention to some plaster works, donated in 1912 by Andrea Malfatti to the municipality of Trento and kept in the Mart, and to focus on the works of this local artist, whose activity is still little known.

Malfatti was born in Mori butreceived his artistic training at the Brera Academy. The Neoclassicism of Canova was at the basis of his training, but later the artist was also influenced by the Realism. During his long career he worked in various places, also out of Italy; he produced works on commission and took part in famous expositions such as the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1878.

The plaster cast gallery shows the study and the work carried out before the creation of sculptures, giving the public the impression of being in the sculptor's studio, in dust of the plaster models. Two marble sculptures can also be found in the exhibition: the Bust of Dante Alighieri, which is permanently hosted in the ground floor of the town library in Trento, and the exotic Egyptian, a veiled reference to untamed slavery.

The visitor will appreciate Malfatti's sculptural ability in handlingdifferent materials, in particular in the juxtaposition between the smoothness of the flesh and the rough, tactile rendering of other surfaces.
