Val di Fiemme remembers the First World War

Precisely one century ago, Val di Fiemme watched with concern as the war moved ever closer. Until that point, the conflict had mainly taken place on the distant battlefields of Galicia. The entry into the war alongside the Entente saw the war move tangibly closer to home, becoming a real danger that threatened to overwhelm life in the valley and its inhabitants.
Following the first exhibition dedicated to the outbreak of war, Villa Flora in Ziano di Fiemme hosts the exhibition The Storm at the Doorstep: Tyrol 1915 from July 12 to September 20 2015, which examines the creation of a new front in the Alps, from Stelvio to the Adriatic Sea. The symbolic image for the poster depicts a soldier gazing at the Lagorai front from the roof of Fort Dossaccio, a photo from the collection of Walter Zorzi.
A prestigious historic artefact will be on display in the garden of Villa Flora thanks to a temporary loan agreement between the Italian War History Museum of Rovereto and the Municipality of Ziano di Fiemme. The 15 cm Schwere Feldhaubitze M 14/16 cannon, known in Italian as an Obice da 149/13, was built for the Imperial Royal Austro-Hungarian Army by Skoda plants in Pilsen and Gyor between 1914 and 1918, with approximately one thousand pieces being produced. It was used throughout the First World War by Austria-Hungary, and was later used in artillery corps by a number of armies in Central Europe and the Balkans and by the Royal Italian Army. A flag of the Habsburg Empire flies outside, hoisted on a flagpole made by Ermanno Deflorian and Isaac Zorzi.
A trench with a shelter in a hut has been reconstructed in the cellars of the villa, positioned to defend a pass on a ridge of Lagorai. The scene recalls a past which can stir the emotions of visitors to the mountains even today, allowing us to perceive the dramatic world of the soldiers engaged at high altitudes. The trench was created by the artist Marcella Dagostin, while the cabin was rebuilt thanks to a gift of timber by the Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme and the valuable work of Gianni Vanzetta andFrancesco Vanzo.
