WARS III: eyes on the world

exhibition
[ Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra]

The exhibition showcases the shots of the three finalists of the third edition of WARS: War and Revolutionary Stories, the international photography competition documenting conflicts and humanitarian emergencies in various parts of the world. It is promoted by Montura and born from an idea by Fabio Bucciarelli, a well-known photojournalist - who is its artistic director - and Raffaele Crocco, editor-in-chief of the Atlas of the World's Wars and Conflicts.

Siegfried Modola, an Italian-British photojournalist and documentary photographer and winner of the competition, presents work done in Myanmar, plunged back into civil war since the military removed the democratically elected government in February 2021.

Federico Rios exhibits a photoreportage from Darien Gap, which has become one of the world's most important migration routes with thousands of people from dozens of countries crossing the stretch of jungle that connects Colombia and Panama, heading north to reach the United States.

Santi Palacios made a work from the town of Bucha, northwest of Kiev, the scene of lacerating events related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The shots on display are part of broader reportages documenting wars and the humanitarian emergencies that ensue, not stopping at the telling of events but investigating their causes and reasons.

The theme of this edition of the prize was photography as a fundamental tool of information, to tell what is wrong in the world, in terms of lack of rights, inequalities, and wars.

Photography is an essential link between news, current events and history: this is why the collaboration between the Atlante delle Guerre and the War Museum of Rovereto was born, which is hosting the exhibition.

The two institutions share a common objective to portray conflict as a dramatic element of continuity in human history.

A jury of the highest caliber composed of Maral Deghati, Philip Blenkinsop and Rodrigo Abd was called to evaluate the works.

The exhibition, which is being mounted in Rovereto as a national premiere, was also made possible thanks to the support of the humanitarian organization Intersos and of Unimondo .
