Ideologies of the twentieth century. Projects, achievements
Four meetings to understand the "short century"
The twentieth century was the 'century of ideologies'.
The emergence of modern democratic systems has in fact been accompanied by the flourishing of great collective horizons of meaning that have aroused widespread support, but also strong opposition.
Communism, National Socialism, political Catholicism, Fascism: the most representative visions of the last century evoke judgments and prejudices that are often hasty and not always meditated upon, because today it is not easy to understand such systems of thought - even more than of power -, which aimed to produce a radical transformation of society in every aspect, from politics to social and economic models, from definitions of identity to the moral sphere, from public choices to private behaviour.
So what do we exactly know about these ideologies? What suggestions do they project on our time after many years?
Organised by the Associazione Forte Colle delle Benne (Forte Colle delle Benne Association) and the Alcide De Gasperi Trentino's Foundation, the webinar cycle "Ideologies of the twentieth century. Projects, achievements" intends to recount some of these visions of the world: some of the greatest scholars in the field will discuss these topics and reveal the related thoughts, experiences and also contradictions.
The last century was the "century of ideologies", but also "the century of the end of ideologies". Ideologies today seem to have no place on the contemporary horizon, since they are victims of their own failure and of the triumph of individualism.
However, unless we want to deny that issues such as social justice, distribution of wealth, the public role of religion, racism and discrimination, nationalism and imperialism are still present in contemporary debate, it is difficult to deny that their legacy still 'inhabits' our societies...
