It was foreign masters who frequently wrote the artistic history of Trentino, while many of the best local artists carried out their activity abroad, to seek their fortune there. The artistic achievements of the first centuries after year 1000 are mainly due to masters of the Po area; a long Gothic season followed, which featured important Austro-Bohemian and Venetian-Lombard contributions. In the 16th century, at the time of the Council, Trento held the centre of the European scene, under the guidance of skilled prince bishops as Bernardo Clesio and the Madruzzos; at the same time, artists such as Romanino, Dossi, Fogolino left important traces of their art, especially in the Buonconsiglio Castle.
