I am the trench
A project about the village’s historical, cultural and environmental heritage of Grigno

The exhibition features photos and excerpts of texts by the pupils and teachers from Grigno Primary School’s Class 4E and the Secondary School’s Class 1D following a project about the village’s historical, cultural and environmental heritage. The heart of the project is the discovery, or rather rediscovery, of the Grigno Trench, a recently renovated First World War structure. Over the decades the trench has been undervalued and used for various unintended purposes. Pupils learned to appreciate the value of their precious local heritage, inscribed in world history and etched into the local landscape, through a process of rediscovery.
During the project the children and teachers were invited to "give a voice" to the trench in order to understand it, making it a personal and collective heritage.
The preferred research instrument was the camera, which encouraged them to observe the place and the environment in which they are immersed.
The cultural biography of the trench was reconstructed by interweaving the stories of individuals, the village and the wider history, to conserve a precious cultural heritage whose own story traverses time and space.
During the time of the exhibition, work by the children of Grigno Nursery School will be exhibited following a similar project of discovery and documentation called The Trench and Me.
