MadeinMath. Discover the mathematics of the world

What do a volleyball, a swimsuit, a robot or a scale model of a train have in common?
From February 26 to June 26, 2016 the new temporary exhibition at MUSE explains the power of mathematics and the influence thisancient discipline has in everyday life.

“MadeinMath” is dedicated to those who never loved formulas, numbers and calculations: the exhibition invites visitors to approach mathematics without fear and to discover the hidden aspects of mathematics, those connected to the chance of describing and transforming the reality around us.
Every area of our life has its mathematical side. Using mathematics we can do weather forecasts, design industrial prototypes, quantify the effects of human behavior or decipher the biochemical aspects of our emotions. Mathematics can be found in medicine, in the management of the Internet or the flows in large cities. We can find it in economy and even in sports, where mathematical models contribute for example to improve the performance of swimmers, of large racing boats, racing cars and even Italy’s national volleyball team.
Mathematics has inspired knowledge being connected to arts, science and social studies. The exhibition Made in Math therefore is a journey through history, embracing both the past and the challenges of the future of this discipline.
The goal is to convince – thanks to a playful approach – even the skeptics, that mathematicians are far more useful to the world than we think.
Using multimedia installations, interactive exhibits and thanks to the virtual presence of some great past and contemporary mathematicians, the exhibition traces the evolution of mathematics from ancient times to the present and shows how every step forward influenced the history of men in every field. The exhibition on social network: #MUSEmenger
